Gongora catilligera
A wonderfully unusual species, Gongora catilligera is an epiphytic orchid from the tropical forests of Central and South America, grown as much for its extraordinary flowers as for its lush, pleated foliage.
Mature plants produce long, pendulous flower spikes that hang below the foliage, carrying multiple intricate, highly sculptural flowers. The blooms have the wonderfully strange, almost otherworldly form characteristic of Gongora and are also fragrant, making this a particularly rewarding species when in flower.
Because the flower spikes naturally grow downwards, Gongora catilligera is especially well suited to basket culture, allowing the flowers to emerge and hang freely beneath the plant.
Care
Light: Medium to bright filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sun.
Temperature: Intermediate to warm growing, ideally around 16–28°C with a slight drop at night.
Water: Water generously during active growth. Gongoras enjoy more consistent moisture than Cattleyas, but the roots still need excellent drainage and plenty of air.
Humidity & Airflow: Prefers high humidity, ideally around 70–90%, combined with good air movement.
Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly while actively growing. These are relatively vigorous orchids when happy and appreciate consistent nutrition during new growth.
Winter: Reduce watering slightly as growth slows, but don’t give it a hard, dry winter rest or allow the pseudobulbs to become severely shrivelled.
Growing: Best grown in an open basket or similar airy setup where its pendulous flower spikes have room to develop naturally.
🌿 A beautifully strange tropical orchid with cascading, fragrant flowers — a real statement species for a humid orchid collection.
