Dendrochilum oxylobum
A beautiful and elegant Dendrochilum species from Borneo, Dendrochilum oxylobum develops into a medium-sized orchid with elongated pseudobulbs and long, slender green leaves.
As the plant matures it can form an impressive clump, producing graceful arching to pendulous flower spikes carrying many small flowers. Rather than relying on individual large blooms, the beauty of this species comes from the abundance and movement of the entire flowering spike.
Its lush foliage and cascading flowers make it particularly suited to a warm, humid greenhouse where it has room to develop naturally.
Care
Light: Medium to bright filtered light. Avoid harsh direct midday sun.
Temperature: Warm to intermediate growing. Aim for approximately 16–28°C, with a gentle drop in temperature at night. Avoid prolonged cold conditions.
Water: Water regularly and thoroughly during active growth. Keep the root zone consistently moist but airy, rather than allowing it to remain completely dry for long periods.
Humidity & Airflow: Appreciates high humidity, around 70–90%, alongside constant gentle airflow. Warm, stagnant conditions should be avoided.
Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly during active growth with a dilute balanced orchid fertiliser.
Winter: Reduce watering slightly if growth slows during the darker months, but do not give it a hard, dry winter rest.
Size: This is not a miniature species. Mature plants can develop foliage around 40 cm or more in length and form substantial clumps over time.
