Dendrobium jenkinsii
A beautiful miniature Dendrobium species from the forests of the eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia, Dendrobium jenkinsii is a compact orchid with a naturally creeping, epiphytic growth habit.
The plant forms clusters of small, flattened pseudobulbs, each carrying a single thick green leaf. As it matures it can develop into an attractive spreading colony, making it particularly well suited to natural wood or cork mounts.
In spring, mature growths produce striking golden-yellow flowers, large in proportion to the size of the plant, with a broad rounded lip. A well-established specimen covered in flowers can make a fantastic display.
Care
Light: Bright filtered light. Good light is important for flowering, with some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun beneficial.
Temperature: Intermediate to warm during active growth, with cooler conditions through winter. Around 15–28°C during growth is suitable, with winter nights comfortably dropping towards 10–15°C.
Water: Water thoroughly while new growth and roots are developing. Mounted plants may need frequent watering during warm weather but should still have plenty of air around the roots.
Winter Rest: This species benefits from a distinct cooler, drier winter period once the pseudobulbs have matured. Reduce watering significantly, giving only enough to prevent excessive shrivelling. Resume regular watering when new growth begins.
Humidity & Airflow: Moderate to high humidity with excellent air movement. Keep good airflow around the plant during its winter rest.
Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly during active growth. Stop or greatly reduce feeding during the winter rest.
Growing: Particularly suited to mounted culture, where its creeping rhizome can spread naturally and its roots can dry quickly between winter waterings.
🌿 A compact Dendrobium with characterful flattened growths and disproportionately large golden flowers — a beautiful species for a naturally grown mounted collection.
