Coelogyne huettneriana

A beautiful and less commonly offered Coelogyne species, Coelogyne huettneriana has the elegant growth and wonderfully intricate flowers that make this genus so rewarding to grow.

Mature plants produce graceful flower spikes carrying pale cream to yellow-green flowers with a beautifully marked, contrasting lip. The combination of delicate colouring and fine detail gives the flowers a subtle, almost wild quality rather than the heavier appearance of many larger-flowered orchids.

The plant develops clusters of pseudobulbs with pleated green foliage and, given good conditions, will gradually form an impressive specimen.

Care

Light: Bright filtered light. Avoid strong midday summer sun, but provide plenty of light to encourage strong growth and flowering.

Temperature: Intermediate to cool-intermediate. Aim for around 12–25°C, with cooler nights beneficial.

Water: Water well while new growth and roots are developing. Allow good drainage but don’t let the plant remain completely dry for extended periods during active growth.

Humidity & Airflow: Appreciates high humidity with good air movement, making it particularly well suited to a humid greenhouse.

Winter: As growth matures and temperatures fall, reduce watering slightly. Keep it somewhat drier through the cooler period without allowing the pseudobulbs to shrivel excessively.

Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly during active growth with a balanced orchid fertiliser, reducing feeding as growth slows.

🌿 An elegant, cool-intermediate Coelogyne with beautifully detailed flowers and lush pleated foliage — a lovely species for a humid, naturally grown orchid collection.
