The Ceremony Begins Before You Arrive
When people think about preparing for a plant medicine ceremony, one of the first questions they ask is:
"What can I eat?"
Food and physical preparation certainly have their place, but preparation goes far beyond a list of foods to avoid.
The ceremony begins long before you sit in front of the medicine.
It begins in the way you arrive.
Preparation is an opportunity to slow down.
To create a little more space in your life.
To become aware of what you are carrying, rather than trying to leave it all behind.
For some, that may mean spending more time in nature.
For others, it may mean reducing unnecessary distractions, simplifying daily life, or allowing yourself moments of quiet before entering the ceremonial space.
There is no perfect way to prepare.
It is simply about arriving honestly.
Understanding Dieta
The word dieta is often misunderstood.
Whilst dietary guidelines can form part of the process, a traditional dieta is far more than changing what you eat.
It is a period of simplifying your life and building a relationship with a particular plant, with yourself, and with the process you are about to enter.
Each tradition approaches dieta differently, and every teacher carries their own lineage and understanding.
My role isn't to replace those traditions or tell you how your dieta should look.
It is simply to help you approach it with respect, curiosity and a clear understanding of why you are doing it.
The Role of Intention
One of the most valuable parts of preparation is taking time to explore your intention.
An intention isn't about trying to control your ceremony or asking the medicine to give you a particular experience.
It is simply a direction.
A reminder of why you are choosing to sit.
Like a compass, it offers direction without deciding the path.
Sometimes the ceremony speaks directly to your intention.
Sometimes it reveals something you never expected.
Both are part of the process.
During a preparation session, we'll explore your intention together until it feels honest, simple and true to where you are today.
The clearest intentions are often the simplest.
Not "Fix me."
But "Help me understand."
Not "Show me everything."
But "Help me listen."
Not "Make me someone new."
But "Help me return to myself."
Preparing Together
Preparation sessions offer a calm space to ask questions, explore any concerns and prepare in a way that feels grounded and realistic.
Together we can talk about practical preparation, dieta, intentions, expectations, and how to approach the experience without trying to control it.
There is no pressure to have all the answers before you arrive.
Preparation isn't about becoming ready.
It's about becoming present.
Because the ceremony doesn't begin when the medicine is served.
It begins with the relationship you start building long before you get there.
